Mckenzie skyles Chemistry Climate change 5/6/20
I'm a healthy skeptic so I wonder a lot if climate change or global warming is even a real big concern. I'm not saying you should do nothing about it, not exactly at least but don't you think people would be doing more about it if there was a HUGE threat to people and wildlife?
Now I know a lot of people will tell you “ global warming is a problem” “stop global warming” and while I do agree that if global warming is in fact real and is a huge problem, that we should do everything we can to slow it down, I also feel that if it was such a huge concern someone would have done a lot more about it by now. People are always coming up with ways to improve our economy, our lives, and to help protect the wildlife and the only recurring problem is people. In the United States alone we burn billions of tons of trash every single year . If we were at any real risk dont you think people would be working a lot harder to find a better way of disposing trash too? Researchers estimated that the soot from open waste burning had a global warming impact equivalent to between 2% and 10% of the global emissions of carbon dioxide. Now imagine how much damage cars could do . We use cars for transportation to school events, work, social events, sporting events and more.
Now all of this seems very alarming but let me put this into perspective. People estimate that by anywhere between 20-200 years global warming will wipe out all of humanity. Now if it were 20 years from now or even 200 everyone would be putting their best efforts towards coming up with a solution . It doesn't seem to be that anyone is really concerned at all. In the 70’s people were told they were about to enter an ice age. People panicked around the globe and there were speculations of people putting coal dust on glaciers to help melt them down. People have been told we are going to run out of trees but if you look around trees are plentiful and we are absolutely nowhere near running out of them anytime soon and now global warming.
The earth goes through “cooling” and “heating” stages periodically as well so is it a coincidence that just when it is doing so people assume the worst. People arent stupid. If there was a burning threat (pun intended) towards all humanity we would be working to solve the problem . People have evolved for centuries upon centuries. We are always improving our rate of survival, so if global warming was out to get us we would be fighting back just as hard.
I am not saying there is no potential threat or even that it isn't real, I am simply stating that if the threat was upon us nobody would be sitting around waiting for it to happen and it would be a global effort to fight back. Just think about this, if we knew there was a huge threat , do you think we would continue taking the same course, or change it?
